Queenie meets Lola

Spring finally seems to have sprung and there’s a positive feeling flowing through the (slightly) warmer air……it must be time to get out dancing!!! And who better to get your feet moving than the gorgeous Lady Lola? This April, I catch up with the yummy mummy and finds out what’s new in Lola land.

Hi there lovely Lola – where can we see and hear you playing these days? For the moment, mainly here in Brighton at my nights Size and Rumour Has It both at the Funfair Club on Kings Road. I also host a radio show on CodesouthFM every Tuesday between 8 and 10pm.

You’ve recently had an addition to your life – how are you feeling??? I’m feeling great and really enjoying being a mummy! I managed to keep DJing right up until the 37th week of my pregnancy……I also started a new LGBT night whilst being pregnant. (Rumour Has It) that my son was actually born on the day of the launch party!!!!

How would you describe your DJing style? Big, bouncy and IN YOUR FACE!!!

What’s your favourite song of all time? It has to be Never Too Much by Luther Vandross. It always makes me feel happy when I hear it and I can never resist singing along.

Which tune always fills up (or rescues) your dancefloor? I think anything by DJ/producer Ill Phil. He remixes a lot of classic tracks such as You Got The Love, Insomnia and Teardrops but gives them a really housey bouncy twist. The crowd always love them.

What would be your ultimate dream gig ? I think it would have to be either New York or San Francisco Pride. I’ve been lucky enough to play lots of different Prides like London, Amsterdam and Benidorm but to have a chance to play in America in front of the huge crowds they attract….well, that would be amazing.

Name a tune you wish you’d never played (and why!)? Anything pop related! When I first started DJing I played a lot of commercial music. When I eventually found my musical style I realised pop music wasn’t for me!

What’s been your best ever gig? Headlining the Girls Dance Tent at Brighton Pride!!! The mixture of nerves and excitement before I go on turns into euphoria once I play my first tune and the crowd are dancing and singing along. DJing to your home crowd of 5000 people is the best feeling ever. I cannot wait to play again this year!

Wildblood and Queenie are exactly what it says on the tin. (Almost.) DJs, freelance journalists, cartoonist and queer writer who likes to wiggle, campaign and disco. Like they do.
